GPA is an important determinant of college admissions and
scholarships. It is also used by employers to recruit new employees.
Therefore it can be very important to improve your grade point average
to become more competitive.
Understand Where You Are
First
of all, you need to understand what your current GPA is. Look at your
transcript and determine your cumulative grade point average. Then
figure out how many semesters or terms you have left before you will
need to submit your grades.
Improve Your Class Schedule
Take classes in which you know you can excel. Plan your class schedule so that you can focus and get good grades.
Improve Weighted GPA
Many colleges and employers look at weighted GPA.
This is different from regular grade point average in that you can
receive higher credit for more difficult classes. Instead of using a 4.0
for an A in the class, you can calculate weighted GPA by using 4.6 or
5.0, depending on your school. The maximum number of points is also
dependent on the type of class. Higher points are available for honors
classes and advanced placement classes. So if you feel confident that
you can earn an A or A- in a class, it is worth taking those classes and
you will raise your grade point average more than you otherwise would
have.
Work With Your Teachers
Work with
your instructors from the beginning. Tell them at the beginning of the
term that you intend to earn an A and that you want to know what it will
take. Participate in study groups and office hours to make sure you not
only master the material, but that you also understand how to score
well on the exams and projects.
