Is the Big College Degree Worth it?

As you gather your college applications together, you should think long and hard about your college choices. While it may be best to shoot for the stars and try to get into the biggest and best school possible, you should ask yourself several questions to make sure that is in your best interest.

What are your career goals?

Do you see yourself working in a big corporate environment for your working life? Or do you see yourself being an entrepreneur and blazing your own trail? These are important questions to ask yourself as you prepare for college.

Where do you want to live?

Your ideal geographic location should factor into your school selection. Do not just think about where you want to live during school, but think about where you will live after graduation. Choose a school that will have a good reputation where you end up. If you choose a school that is strong in its immediate area, but not where you end up living, you may be at a disadvantage. Carefully think through where you will be and which schools will set you up for success.

How important is a big-name school in your field?

Many students shoot for the stars in picking a college. This is very ambitious and often a good idea. But before you assume that you should go Ivy League or go home, think about what will get you where you want to go. The top colleges are not always the best fit for each student. Take into consideration programs offered, location, cost, placement, and alumni strength when choosing a college. Evaluate all of these questions as you prepare for college applications. Remember that your application profile (GPA, test scores, class rank, extracurricular activities, etc.) are large factors in the decision, as well.
